What is your favourite type of weather?

Netherlands, 23.3.2024

In response to the question “What is your favourite weather?” I would like to propose that I am a person who appreciates all seasons, but as a (former) runner, I have a particular fondness for autumn. Nevertheless, I believe each season possesses its own unique charm.

Spring symbolizes for me the commencement of the cycle of life, death, renewal, and rebirth—a time of rejuvenation, where nature blooms anew, promising the renewal of life. It embodies innocence, beautifully depicted in Claude Monet’s “Springtime,” capturing the perpetual flow of life. William Wordsworth’s “Lines Written in Early Spring” and “Daffodils” epitomize this vibrant season for me.

Summer signifies the onset of new beginnings, where life flourishes under the warmth and positive energy of the sun. It evokes memories of vitality, sailing, and carefree living in the South of France, reminiscent of Monet’s paintings. However, as John Steinbeck aptly noted, “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?”

Autumn, with winter looming, represents the beginning of the end—a time when nature finds equilibrium and reaches its splendid maturity. The changing leaves and warm earth tones encapsulate the quiet beauty of the season, as expressed by Albert Camus: “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” It also brings to mind the splendour of Indian Summer in New England and my adventurous years in Toronto, resonating with David Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.”

Winter marks the conclusion of the cycle, often symbolizing the end of life—the final chapter in our story. Amidst the long, dark nights, it becomes a period of reflection, promising regeneration around the fireplace with red wine and good friends. As the trees stand bare and the northern wind chills, the arrival of snow heralds the onset of festivities and the beginning of a new cycle of life. Winter evokes memories of my time living in München and Zurich, leisurely moments in St. Moritz or Ponteresina, and Gstaad. It also brings to mind Robert Frost’s “Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening” and the captivating paintings of Louis Apol.
