Welcome to my Octogenarian blog — a space shaped by a lifetime of watching, thinking, and wondering about the world as it is, and as it might yet become.

Here you will find reflections on life, politics, culture, nature, technology, and humanity. They are informed by eight decades of observation and experience: by the cultural treasures that make life worth living, but also by concern about the direction of our societies and the world we are leaving to those who follow us.

Throughout these essays, I return to certain universal values — human dignity, freedom, justice, tolerance, and the rule of law — not as slogans, but as a compass in uncertain times.

A Quiet Counterweight

We live in an age in which outrage often overwhelms reflection, propaganda finds eager ears, and complicated questions are reduced to slogans and certainties.

These essays do not seek to persuade loudly. They aim to question, to examine, and sometimes to challenge. Above all, they offer a quiet counterweight — a place where doubt is permitted, history still matters, and reflection has not yet surrendered to noise.

The Core Domains

This blog is organised into three main domains:

Power, Order, and the World

On global power, international relations, war and peace, and the recurring dilemmas of strategy, justice, and responsibility.

Democracy, Society, and Responsibility

On civic life, democratic institutions, human rights, the rule of law, migration, social responsibility, and the pressures confronting open societies. This domain also considers artificial intelligence, the changing nature of work, and the need to ensure that technological progress remains answerable to human values.

Memory, Meaning, and Continuity

On culture, art, literature, music, nature, ageing, and the experiences that connect individual lives across generations.

You will also find:

  • The Fables of Power — satirical reflections in which politics becomes family drama.
  • NL Notities — Dutch-language reflections rooted in my own society.
  • Occasional dialogues with my artificial intelligence companion — sometimes playful, sometimes philosophical, and increasingly concerned with what intelligence may become when it is separated from wisdom.
