Prompt: Let Me Be Frank
If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why?
Letters to the Prompt
Let me be frank—this morning, I find myself concerned about the mental health of our beloved prompt. After all, it has once again asked us a familiar question designed to spark our grey cells: “Who is your favorite historical figure?” A question, I might add, to which I already responded in “My Favourite Historical Dinner Guest.”
While there are indeed countless fascinating historical figures—Cleopatra, Hypatia, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, or Madame du Deffand, to name just a few—my answer remains unchanged, particularly in this current era of international turmoil and the ongoing tragedy in Ukraine. My choice is still Count von Metternich.
Prince Klemens Wenzel von Metternich was a complex and finely crafted figure. A brilliant conversationalist with a refined and delicate demeanor, he embodied the essence of the European eighteenth-century aristocracy. He carried qualities of diplomacy and foresight that are sorely lacking in today’s world.he prompt is requesting a answer to a similar question it asked before “Who would you invite for dinner?”
